Microsoft Demanding Samsung Smartphone Royalty Fees
Despite Microsoft developing their own mobile operating system, Windows Phone, they play an integral part in the functionality of Android, a competing OS. The insistence does not come without reason, Microsoft possesses a considerable amount of patents found within the Android OS. In addition, this isn’t the first time Microsoft has exercised their legal division in protecting their patents. According to Reuters last April, Microsoft and HTC reached a royalty payment agreement resulting in HTC paying Microsoft a $5 fee for every Android phone produced. Microsoft has now approached Samsung with a fee of $15 per device, however Sasmung is pursuing to lower the fee to $10 in exchange for developing more Window’s equipped devices. With the recent news of the Galaxy S II setting all-time records, I can see why Microsoft has engaged in seeking compensation.
